Genealogy
...Tips for family research

To begin your research you need to start making records of your immediate and wider family. Start with yourself and work outwards. This will give you an idea of what information you need to gather.

Write this information down a pedigree sheet - an A4 sheet of paper which allows you to record names, birth dates and death dates, for four generations of your family. These may be downloaded for free from:
www.geniecreations.com
or
www.ancestry.com/save/charts/ancchart.htm

Ask your relatives for any information. They may have birthday books, certificates, family bibles, scrap books, newspaper cuttings, anything that allows you to situate a person in a place or time.

Always think laterally when searching family names. Names are often misspelled or even switched around. On one occasion, someone was searching for the death of a George Thomas Baker in the Victorian BDMs. They experienced a lot of trouble finding his details, but eventually he was found under George Thomas, with the correct dates. The problem? His surname had been interpreted as being his occupation - a baker.
