Julie and Julia by Julia Powell
Julie and Julia: 65 days, 524 recipes, 1 tiny apartment kitchen: how one girl risked her marriage, her job and her sanity to master the art of living.

The sub-title says it all really! Whilst I enjoyed the movie of the same name, this is an easy, entertaining and quirky book set a year after September 11 in New York City and written with a very young, modern voice. The author challenges herself to cook her way through Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child, and also discovers the art of blogging. Reading Julie and Julia triggered a curiosity about the famous American cook and led me to her biography, My Life in France.

You might like to work your way through all of these titles and the DVD, but be warned, only the brave would take on the cookbook!

Liquor by Poppy Z Brite
Liquor

In a city where consuming alcohol in public is not only legal, it’s almost compulsory, what better theme for a restaurant than for each dish to highlight a different alcoholic beverage? This is the premise of New Orleans author Poppy Z Brite’s book Liquor, where we follow the lives of two chefs – Rickey and G-man as they make their dream a reality.

New Orleans can be a rough and ready city and the language in the kitchens is often colourful to say the least. Without a doubt, the reader feels a part of the hot, busy kitchen as the workers ‘get in the weeds’ or wind down with a drink together after service.

This is an intimate account of the realities of kitchen work and the dream of restaurant ownership with a bit of love and murder thrown in.

Diamonds and Dust by Sheryl McCorry
Diamonds and Dust

My Mother In-law said, “You should read this." I did... and you should read it too.

Sheryl McCorry grew up in the dust and dirt of the Kimberley. She took crocodiles to school, learnt to muster cattle and lived in a world with no television or phones. At 18 she married Bob McCorry a drover and buffalo shooter. Sheryl soon became the only woman in a team of stockmen. She learned how to run rogue bulls and to outsmart the neighbours in the toughest game of all – mustering cattle. Her play ground was a million acres of unfenced, unmarked boundaries. She tells her story with it’s tragedies and joys
with honesty and passion.

Come and visit Sheryl’s world and read her story.

Now by Morris Gleitzman
Now

Felix is an 80 year old grandfather, a highly esteemed retired doctor who still struggles to come to terms with the nightmare that was his childhood. With the help of his 11 year old grand-daughter Zelda, Felix will face the ghosts of his past when together they face another frightening battle for survival – the bushfires of Victoria’s Black Saturday.

Australia has many children’s authors to be proud of, and Morris Gleitzman is one of my favourites. Again he has woven a story that sensitively and realistically portrays the struggles and traumas that children face. This story like many of his previous, will introduce you to characters who will become friends with whom you will laugh and cry. All three books in this series bear the same dedication, “For all the children who have never had the chance to do their best”. May these books inspire us all to do our best!

Now can be read without having read the previous two books, but I would highly recommend beginning with Once and following the sequence through to its very satisfying finish.
