Recommended for adult audiences.
Join us to hear Anthony Hill speak in person about his book The Last Convict - a colourful recreation of the life and times of the last known convict to be sent to Australia.
It's a moving study of old age and loneliness, as one social outcast finds meaning in his impoverished life through the power of literature. Meticulously researched and brilliantly woven into an engaging fictional account, it is an unforgettable story by an award-winning writer and historian, providing insight into the life of Samuel Speed, believed to be the last of the transported convicts to die in Australia, and a vivid recreation of life in Australia’s penal era. A few months before his death in November 1938, Samuel shared his life story with a journalist from the Perth Mirror.
Anthony is a brilliant speaker with and incredible knowledge of the history behind his books. He meticulously researched Samuel’s life and even found the transcripts of his trial.
