Join bestselling Tasmanian author Claire van Ryn as she discusses her latest novel, Where the Birds Call Her Name.

Weaving between 1960s and modern-day Tasmania, this captivating novel follows a daughter’s quest to uncover her mother’s history. After her mother’s death, Saskia inherits her caravan and inside, finds hints of her mother’s mysterious past. This sets her and her young daughter, Anouk, off on a journey from Broome to Tasmania.

In 1968, teenager Greta De Winter (Saskia’s mother) finds solace in the Stanley wetlands. Her father, a local councillor, and her mother, a taxidermist creating bird dioramas for the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, keep up appearances while concealing a dark family secret. When Saskia and her daughter Anouk arrive in Stanley, they search for the missing pieces to the puzzle of Greta’s tragic childhood.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Tasmania’s north-west, this novel explores themes of family bonds, betrayal, and self-discovery. It also emphasises the importance of protecting Australia’s unique ecosystems and celebrating the diverse wildlife in our country, with a strong focus on birdlife
