Meet OLiV (Our Library Van)

Introducing OLiV: Our Library Van!

We are thrilled to announce the newest addition to Our Library - a Mercedes Sprinter van that will be servicing the Peninsula from February 2025.

OLiV's main mission is to bring books, Wi-Fi, and other library materials directly to you.

We will be following a fortnightly trial schedule where OLiV will be visiting 16 stops across 14 unique locations on the Mornington Peninsula. We will also be partnering with Your Local Connection Points. This way, Our Library can reach more of our community and provide convenient access to our services and resources.

With OLiV, you can browse our collection, place holds, pick up, borrow, and return your library items from any of our 14 designated sites.

You can become a member, use our free Wi-Fi, or browse the latest digital news on our shared community iPad.

We can't wait for you to experience the convenience and accessibility of OLiV - Our Library Van.

When Will OLiV be back on the road? Why all the delays?

We have experienced lengthy delays due to manufacturer supply and seeking a suitable supplier to complete a customised fit-out to ensure the van is safe for both staff and community and equipped to run a great service.

We appreciate your understanding and patience. Works are now complete, and OLiV will be launching in February 2025.

Where will OLiV stop?

OLiV will be visiting 16 stops across 14 unique locations on the Mornington Peninsula.

A comprehensive analysis of a range of information has informed the trial timetable including:

  • Data from the previous mobile library service
  • Data from the Click and Delivery Service and The Home Library Service (HLS)
  • Demographics of Mornington Peninsula Shire including:
    • Disadvantaged areas
    • Age of households
    • Vulnerable children
    • Education – areas of high risk of disengagement.
    • Mental health
    • Family violence.

The initial 14 locations that Our Library Van will visit, will be on a trial basis, which will allow for adjustments to be made based on feedback and usage, ensuring that Our Library Van best meets the needs of the community members it serves.

These stops include: Balnarring, Blairgowrie, Capel Sound, Dromana, Flinders, Hastings, Mornington, Mount Eliza, Mount Martha, Red Hill, Rye, Somers, Sorrento and Tootgarook.

What services does OLiV provide?

OLiV offers DVDs and books including the latest fiction and non-fiction, talking books, large print, and children’s stories.

In addition, library members can request any library items from our catalogue and collect these items from the most convenient library van stop to their homes or workplaces.

Free Wi-Fi will be available to connect personal devices, or our community can use a shared iPad.

Newspapers and magazines will not be available; however, our community can use the shared iPad to read digital newspapers and magazines onsite. Our friendly staff will be able to assist you in accessing these digital resources.

Due to Our Library Van’s fortnightly roster, the loan period for any item borrowed from Our Library Van will be extended to 4 weeks. Unfortunately, magazines will remain as a 7-day loan, and Inter-Library loans are currently unavailable to be collected from Our Library Van.

Can I collect my holds from OLiV?

Yes! You will be able to select Library Van (MPLS) as a pickup location when placing holds on any items within our library catalogue.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide any Inter-Library loan requests for collection from Our Library Van.

You will receive a text message or email once your items are ready for collection. Your holds will be available for collection from OLiV at any of our 16 stops for a period of 14 days.

You can also return any library items to OLiV.

Will the Click and Delivery Service still operate?

The click and delivery service has now ceased.

Community members who were receiving this service have been provided notice and an explanation as to how they can still access Our Library service if they are unable to visit the branches.

This service commenced as a response to COVID-19, and we committed to continue this service until the new library van service was launched.

Alternative options:

The Home Library Service may be an option for those who meet the current eligibility criteria. Borrowers are matched to a volunteer who will arrange a monthly visit to assist them in remaining connected to their local library. These volunteers provide a free, friendly, and personalised service to Mornington Peninsula residents. For more information and to check eligibility requirements please click here or email: homelibraryservice@mornpen.vic.gov.au or call 0408 680 883

Eligible individuals can use our community transport through the Shire’s Community Care team to visit Our Library. Commuters must be independent and mobile. We can accommodate for both wheelchairs and mobility aids. Bookings essential: 5950 1605

Will customers be allowed onboard OLiV?

No. Due to the smaller vehicle size, and the safety of everyone, our community will be unable to enter OLiV. Our Library items will be wheeled out of the van for easy browsing.

When the weather is inclement, what happens?

Our OLiV sites include community houses, child and family health centres and other community resources.

Our collection can be wheeled off the van for browsing and borrowing inside these spaces.

OLiV has an awning that can be utilised to keep out the weather.

OLiV does not operate on public holidays or during extreme climate events such as days of total fire ban, flooding, or heatwaves to keep both our staff and the community safe.

Why did you retire the old Mobile Library Truck?

Early in 2020, the Mornington Peninsula Mobile Library was removed from service. The large semi-trailer was unsuitable for a modern library service due to several mechanical and environmental problems. In addition, the large semi-trailer no longer aligned with the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s policy of zero carbon emissions by 2040.

A heavy vehicle licence, ample open spaces for parking and turning, and power installed at every mobile library stop were also necessary for the semi-trailer to operate effectively.

To help Mornington Peninsula Libraries provide the best possible library service, a smaller, more sustainable sprinter van was commissioned. Our Library Van (OLiV) will provide greater access to Our Library services and resources in locations across the Peninsula that the old truck couldn’t reach.
