Story Dogs
Story Dogs is a wonderful volunteer run literacy program that improves primary school aged children’s reading and communication skills by having them read to a trained companion dog and their handler.
Dogs are ideal reading companions because they allow children to proceed at their own pace and are less intimidating than peers or adults. They listen attentively and do not judge, laugh or criticise.
Our Library is partnering with Story Dogs Australia to foster a supportive environment for children to grow and develop into confident, lifelong readers.
Children participating can bring their own books or access items from our wide-ranging collection.
These sessions are free; however, bookings are essential. Call (03) 5950 1710 or visit us at Hastings Library to learn more about this program and how to enrol your child.
Wanting to volunteer?
Do you have a calm, well-behaved dog that is at least one year old? Join Story Dogs Australia and become part of a nationally recognised literacy program that helps children learn to read with confidence.
As a volunteer, you’ll receive full training and support from Story Dogs Australia.
Most breeds can participate - what matters most is a dog’s temperament and obedience. Dogs (and their handlers) must pass an accreditation test through Story Dogs Australia, be vaccinated and have yearly vet checks.
After the retirement of our beloved Mornington Library Story Dog Kenzie, we are looking for volunteers for both Mornington and Rosebud Libraires. Sessions are held one day after school between 4-5.30pm. For more information about becoming a volunteer, call Gabrielle – Mornington South Coordinator 0419 585 530 or visit: storydogs.com.au
