'Murray River Girl’ a true story, by Cathy Hope, is set in Australia from 1934 -1945, during the era of the Great Depression, Polio Epidemic and World War Two.
From birth, 25 April 1934 until November 11, 1945, Roma spent her childhood on the banks of the Murray River at Coomealla in New South Wales.
Her home was a tent home constructed from bush timber and wheat sacks. Before Roma’s birth, her father was a homeless swaggie without a job and her mother, a shearers’ cook, was away from home for at least three months a year.
Roma’s story evolves as she roams around freely playing at the riverbank and in the bush.
The Murray River, Gypsies, travelling circuses, rabbit plagues and droughts all brought her many, sometimes hilarious adventures.
Free, bookings essential.
